Monthly Fuel & ETS Surcharges

Fuel Surcharge Adjustments and EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) Updates In compliance with the IMO 2020 regulations, all shipping providers are required to adjust their fuel surcharges monthly based on current barrel prices. These surcharges may fluctuate each month and, in some cases, may be revised within the month. Impact of EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) Amendments – Effective 1st January 2024: As of 1st January 2024, amendments to the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) will result in an additional surcharge for all shipments under the following circumstances:
  • EU or EU Port Voyages: 100% of emissions from voyages within the EU or while ships are within EU ports.
  • EU Departure/Arrival: 50% of emissions for voyages starting or ending outside of the EU, with the remaining emissions subject to the regulations of the country of departure/arrival.
  • UK Domestic and EU Routes: The UK has announced the introduction of a similar surcharge on UK domestic routes and UK-EU routes, though specific dates for implementation have yet to be confirmed.
For additional details on the ETS surcharge, please refer to the EU Commission Website. Phase-in of ETS Allowances: The ETS surcharge will be implemented gradually. Shipping companies will purchase allowances for a portion of their total emissions as follows:
  • 40% in 2024
  • 70% in 2025
  • 100% in 2026
Monthly Fuel and ETS Surcharge Adjustments: Please be advised that fuel surcharges will continue to vary from month to month, with possible mid-month adjustments in exceptional circumstances. The ETS surcharge will also be updated monthly to reflect fluctuations in the cost per tonne of CO2 and the corresponding exchange rate. Changes will typically be applied on or around the 1st of each month, depending on the shipping provider. For further information on the ETS surcharge, we recommend visiting the EU Commission Website.
